Georg Rothbart , also Georg Konrad Rothbart , (born November 22, 1817 in Roth , † September 3, 1896 in Coburg ) was a German architect , construction clerk in the service of Duke Ernst II of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha and head of the ducal collections in Coburg.

Live and act

In early childhood he came to Nuremberg with his parents . His father owned a wire mesh factory there, but died early, so that his mother and sister had to support the family with sewing work. A guardian took him and his younger brother Ferdinand Rothbart (1823–1899) to an orphanage, where they both received their education and training. From 1838 he studied painting at the Munich Art Academy .

Work

Callenberg Castle, Lower Castle

From 1838, under the direction of Carl Alexander Heideloff, the Veste Coburg was rebuilt in the Romantic style and the current art collections were housed there. Heideloff brought in Georg Rothbart in 1839 to carry out the extensive work that was completed in 1859. Between 1856 and 1859 he rebuilt the lower castle on Callenberg in the neo-Gothic style. In order to supplement his salary, Rothbart took on various sideline jobs.

The court theater hired him on April 1, 1845 as a costumier and decorative painter . Between 1848 and 1854 he also worked as a drawing teacher at the new Ernestinum Realschule , combined with his appointment as court painter in October 1849. In 1852 he was also the first director of the newly created building crafts school , which Rothbart held until 1857.

In July 1851 Ernst II commissioned him to inspect the copperplate engraving cabinet with 330,000 sheets and in November 1854 to inspect all the collections in the fortress. He then officially became head of the ducal collections at Veste Coburg.

Ketschendorf Castle

From 1860 on, Rothbart took on private contracts in addition to the Duke's construction projects. In 1866, for example, he signed a contract with the Baroness von Ketschendorf to demolish her previous house at Parkstrasse 2 and to build a new building as Ketschendorf Castle . The demolition and new construction took place in 1869, with the demolished house later being rebuilt on the Obere Klinge 3 property using old masonry parts.

Edinburgh Palace

Rothbart's most important works, which were commissioned by the Duke, include the renovation of the Palais Edinburgh in the neo-renaissance style with an addition of a third floor and in 1878 the construction of the Ernstfarm domain as a model farm based on the English farms of the Agriculture Movement .

His son Hans Rothbart (1846–1904) also worked as an architect in Coburg.

Awards

In October 1853, Ernst II. Rothbart awarded the gold medal of merit for his work in the construction of the new inn on the fortress. In 1858 Rothbart was appointed ducal building officer. In 1877 he received the Knight's Cross 2nd class of the Ernestine House Order . In 1879 he was appointed ducal councilor and in 1881 as secret councilor . The Commander's Cross, Class II, of the House Order was finally awarded to him in 1893.
