Georg Ludwig Riedesel Freiherr zu Eisenbach (born November 10, 1725 in Darmstadt ; † November 14, 1800 ) from the Riedesel family was an officer and Hessian hereditary marshal .

family

Georg Ludwig was the younger son of Hermann Riedesel zu Eisenbach (1682–1745) and his second wife Anna Metta Catharina Riedesel zu Eisenbach (1691–1747). His eldest brother Hermann (1712–1773) became Minister of Hesse and Darmstadt .

In 1771 Georg Ludwig married his cousin Sophie Louise Dorothea Juliane, the daughter of the Prussian general Johann Volprecht Riedesel zu Eisenbach (1696–1757) and sister of the humanist Johann Hermann Riedesel zu Eisenbach .

Life

Georg Ludwig embarked on a military career and rose to the position of colonel sergeant in the army of the Dutch Republic of the Seven United Provinces .

In 1775 his uncle Friedrich Georg Riedesel zu Eisenbach from the Ludwigseck branch of the Riedesel family died. According to the family law, his successor in the office of Hereditary Marshal of the Landgraves of Hesse would have been the Reich Chamber Court Assessor Johann Wilhelm Riedesel zu Eisenbach († 1782), a cousin of Georg Ludwig, but Landgrave Ludwig IX. von Hessen-Darmstadt refused to confirm him in this office. In coordination with Johann Wilhelm and his four older brothers (all of whom were childless), it was decided in the Riedesel Samthouse that Georg Ludwig should become Hereditary Marshal. Accordingly, he was from Landgrave Ludwig IX. with the Erbmarschallamt invested . The management of the Riedesel Samthouse remained with Johann Wilhelm Riedesel, the oldest male member of the Samthouse, until his death on August 5, 1782; only after his death did this pass to Georg Ludwig.

The wars that shook Europe after the French Revolution also reached Riedesel . In 1787, Georg Ludwig concluded a settlement with the Knights of Althessia regarding the burden of war, which was costly for the Riedesel family. From 1790 he actually left the business of government to Carl Georg Riedesel zu Eisenbach (1746–1819), the son of Johann Wilhelm, who in 1812 was also to become Hereditary Marshal.
