Hermann XVIII. Riedesel zu Eisenbach (born June 11, 1682 ; † May 10, 1745 ) was Hereditary Marshal of the Hessian Landgraves and Burgrave of the Reichsburg Friedberg .

Life

Baron Hermann XVIII. Riedesel zu Eisenbach came from the Eisenbach branch of the Riedesel family . He was the son of George XII. Riedesel zu Eisenbach (1647–1704) and his wife Maria geb. von Bodenhausen (1662–1711), whom her father married in 1680. His paternal grandfather was the Hessian hereditary marshal Johann Riedesel zu Eisenbach (1607–1676) .

He attended the Academy in Marburg and studied at the universities of Giessen and Utrecht Law . After graduating, he traveled to the United and Austrian Netherlands and then returned to Eisenbach Castle .

After the death of his father in 1704 he joined the life guard as court squire and Kornet in the military service of the Landgraviate of Hessen-Kassel . In 1708, Landgrave Ernst Ludwig von Hessen-Darmstadt appointed him to Darmstadt as councilor and chamberlain.

On December 22, 1711 he took part in the imperial coronation of Charles VI. in Frankfurt am Main . In 1712 he was appointed Oberamtmann in the Oberamt Darmstadt .

Together with the Saxon-Eisenachian court marshal Adolf Hermann Riedesel zu Eisenbach , he led the negotiations between the Riedesel office and the Landgraviate of Hesse-Darmstadt and played a key role in the state treaty that was concluded on March 4, 1713.

In 1714, on the occasion of the coronation of King George I , he was on a diplomatic mission in London with the Landgrave Hereditary Prince . In 1717 he was appointed a secret councilor. From 1727 until his death he was burgrave of Friedberg .

With the title of a real secret government councilor, he became a member of the state government in Darmstadt in 1728 and at the same time senior bailiff of the county of Nidda , an administrative district belonging to the county of Hesse-Darmstadt. In 1731 he was subdelegated commissioner of the imperial sequestration commission in Pfalz-Zweibrücken .

In 1734 he, now the oldest male Riedesel, became hereditary marshal of the Hessian counties. After his death, this title passed to his cousin Hermann Riedesel zu Eisenbach (1682–1751) .

He also became a curator at the State University of Giessen .

family

Hermann XVIII. Riedesel married Anna Metta Catharina Riedesel zu Eisenbach on October 21, 1711 (* 1691; † 1747). The marriage resulted in four daughters and sons Hermann (1712–1773) and Georg Ludwig (1725–1800). Georg Ludwig later became hereditary marshal himself. The daughters were: Abba Catharina (1713–1755), Sidonia (1714–1759), who married Adam Heinrich Gottlob von Lichtenstein auf Lahm in 1736 , Anna Margaretha (* 1728), who married Dietrich Johann Ehrenreich von Redwitz, and Hedwig Amalia (1729 -1734).
