Georg Petel (actually: Petle ; also Petele, Betle, Pöttle), (* 1601 or 1602 Weilheim in Upper Bavaria , † 1634 in Augsburg ) was a sculptor , embosser and ivory carver .

Petel probably did an apprenticeship with his guardian Bartholomäus Steinle in Weilheim and in Munich. He made several trips, including to Antwerp in 1620, to Paris in 1621, as well as to Genoa and Rome (1622-1624). He was also on friendly terms with Rubens and Van Dyck , who influenced him artistically. In 1625 he received civil rights and master craftsman rights in the city of Augsburg.

Petel was one of the most important early baroque sculptors. His works can be viewed in the Badisches Landesmuseum in Karlsruhe , the Augsburg Maximilian Museum , the Bavarian National Museum and the Augsburg Cathedral .

In the 18th century, Petel was nicknamed "German Michelangelo ".
