Georg Scherer (philosopher)

Georg Scherer (born April 30, 1928 in Oberhausen ; † May 13, 2012 ) was a German philosopher.

Life

Georg Scherer was born as the son of Dr. Georg Scherer and Adele Scherer, née Richter-Morawe, were born. In March 1947 he passed the school leaving examination. From 1947 he studied philosophy , German and Catholic theology at the universities of Bonn and Tübingen . In 1951 he received his doctorate in Bonn with the work The emotional apriorism: Attempt to deal with Max Scheler . His Rigorosum with the subjects Philosophy, New German Literary History and Christian Social Teaching was on July 25, 1951. He then worked in adult education, including as the academic director of the civics seminar in Olpe .

In 1960 he was the founding director of the Catholic academy "Die Wolfsburg" in Mülheim adR. From 1965 to 1993 he taught as the successor to Josef Pieper as professor of philosophy at the University of Essen.

At the 82nd German Catholic Convention in 1968 in Essen, he appeared as a critic of the encyclical Humanae Vitae . In 1999 Pope John Paul II awarded him the distinction of “ Knight of the Order of St. Gregory the Great ”. From 1952 he was chairman of the Catholic Education Center in Oberhausen. In 1998 he was awarded the Badge of Honor of the City of Oberhausen. Scherer was chairman of the honorary council of Rot-Weiß Oberhausen . In 2008 he received the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon.

In 1954 he married the painter Hannelore Woller (since then Hannelore Scherer). The marriage had four children.

Scherer wrote over twenty books, the article on the modern concept of the person in the Historical Dictionary of Philosophy (1989), the article on Max Scheler and love in the Theologische Realenzyklopädie , the article on women / men in the Lexicon of Bioethics (1998) and the article on Thomas Aquinas in the Metzler Philosophen Lexicon (1989). His book The Problem of Death in Philosophy has been translated into Polish, Czech, and Italian. The Italian translation was done by the philosopher Giuliano Sansonetti, who also translated books by Friedrich Heinrich Jacobi , Friedrich Schleiermacher and Wolfhart Pannenberg into Italian. Scherer's book Ehe im Horizont des Seins went through two editions and was translated into Spanish ( Nueva comprensión de la sexualidad. El matrimonio en el horizonte del ser ). The Spanish translation also received two editions. In the summer semester of 2009 he - now over 80 years old - held lectures at the University of Essen. His most cited book is probably The Problem of Death in Philosophy .
