biography

Seebeck was the son of a master tailor. He went to school in Brake and learned the coppersmith trade in Oldenburg . He then went on a hike and worked for the Sulzer Brothers company in Winterthur, among others . He returned in 1871 and until 1876 ran the coppersmith's shop and the repair shop of the widow Schultz.

In 1876 Seebeck founded his own coppersmith's shop in Geestemünde , which, among other things, manufactured pipes, pumps, wind motors and peat spreading machines. In 1879 he also began to manufacture smaller iron boats. His first ship was the steam launch Minna with hull number 1.1886. He acquired a new site with a railway connection on the cross channel. There were barges and tugs built. In September 1889 a foundry was put into operation. The shipyard employed between 120 and 150 men.

In 1891 Seebeck took over the dock and shipyard Schau & Oltmanns, which was founded in 1853 . Older slipways were renewed and new ones were added. In September 1891 the Uranus was built , the first fish steamer and in 1892 another five fish steamer followed. In 1894 Heinrich Hohnholz ordered his first fish steamer there and, with a few exceptions, all other fish steamer. In 1894 the Reichspostdampfers Stettin of North German Lloyd was extended . In 1895 Seebeck acquired the two dock and shipyard sites on the right bank of the Geeste from the former Ulrichs and Lange shipyard . He expanded it into a new shipyard. The Seebeck shipyard increasingly used building docks instead of runways. In 1895 the company became G. Seebeck AG, shipyard, machine factory and dry docks . In 1901 he took over the shipbuilding company FW Wencke . Larger freight and passenger steamers up to 3000 GRT were built.

Around 1904, Seebeck planned a new shipyard and from 1906 to 1910 this shipyard was built in the fishing port of Bremerhaven .

The Villa Seebeck in Bremerhaven- Mitte , Deichstrasse 15, was built in 1908 according to plans by Johann Allers. It is a listed building .

In 1920 Seebeck donated 250,000 marks for charitable purposes and was awarded honorary citizenship . In 1921 he retired from the board of directors and remained on the shipyard's supervisory board . This had around 2200 employees. During his lifetime, 468 ships were built in his shipyards. In 1928 - after his death - the Seebeck shipyard became part of the Deschimag group as AG Weser , Werk Seebeck . Some operating facilities were taken over from the Tecklenborg shipyard in Bremerhaven.
