Georg Stern (architect, 1820)

Georg Stern (born December 1, 1820 in Schwerin ; † July 9, 1876 in Naples ) was a German architect , lecturer , librarian and archivist, as well as art collector and donor .

Life

Georg Stern graduated from the Schwerin high school and then attended the local building school in Berlin . He was later referred to by colleagues as a "[...] capable master builder " and then occupied himself with art and, above all, with architecture throughout his life, although he never held a state office, but always worked as a freelance architect.

Stern earned "[...] great merits" in his hometown during many years of voluntary activities in various non-profit institutions. Above all, he was involved for many years, for example as a member of the association for artists and art lovers in Schwerin , and taught numerous students at the Schwerin trade school.

Georg Stern also worked as a teacher at the Grüder'sche Baugewerkschule , the educational institution opened by the master bricklayer and its first director Heinrich Grüder on November 1, 1865. One of Stern's students there was the later private builder Rudolph Speer (1849-1893).

Georg Stern was also the librarian of the city ​​library for a quarter of a century , the expansion of which he significantly influenced.

On November 25, 1851, Georg Stern joined the Association for Mecklenburg History and Archeology , where he took over the supervision of the picture collection founded by Glöckler after the death of the archive registrar Glöckler in 1861. Stern also donated several valuable antiquities to the association .

Georg Stern died at the age of 56 in Naples from a stroke during a study tour of art through Italy . In 1876, the year he died, the Schwerin architect's private library came into the collection of today's Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania State Library .
