Gerhard Heitz

Gerhard Heitz (born March 28, 1925 in Burg (near Magdeburg) ) is a German historian . Heitz is considered to be the nestor of GDR agricultural history.

Gerhard Heitz graduated from high school in Berlin-Wilmersdorf in 1943 and joined the NSDAP . From 1943 to 1945 Heitz was a soldier in the Wehrmacht . In 1946 he passed the Abitur. He then studied history and German studies at the University of Leipzig from 1946 to 1950 and, from the summer semester of 1949, both the same subjects and economic history at the Humboldt University in Berlin . His academic teachers were Rudolf Kötzschke , Heinrich Sproemberg , Walter Markov and Jürgen Kuczynski . From 1950 to 1959 he worked as a research assistant or senior assistant at the University of Leipzig. There he received his doctorate in 1953 on rural linen production in Saxony from 1470 to 1555. In 1960, he also received his habilitation in Leipzig with his thesis on social structure and class struggle in Mecklenburg in the 18th century . From 1961 he taught regional and agricultural history as a professor at the University of Rostock . From 1969 to 1990 he was a full professor for agricultural history and from 1982 for the history of the Middle Ages. From 1962 to 1976, Heitz was director of the Historical Institute and the History Section. In 1990 he retired. In the same year he was awarded an honorary doctorate from Lajos Kossuth University .

His teaching and research areas are the history of the Middle Ages and the early modern period, economic history, agricultural history and Mecklenburg regional history. His work revolves mainly around the second serfdom , landlordship and peasant class struggle. The regional focus of his work was on Eastern Elbe . As a member of the scientific advisory board for local research of the Geographical Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR, he was involved in the publication of the series Values ​​of our Homeland with regard to the subject of history . In 2010 he became an honorary member of the Association for Mecklenburg History and Archeology .
