Georg Teuffel
Georg Teuffel , Low German Jürgen Teuffel (* around 1610 in Nuremberg , † around 1672 in Lübeck ) was a German builder and sculptor.
life and work
Teuffel worked in Nuremberg, Lübeck and Strasbourg . From 1651 he was a citizen of Lübeck. From 1663 to 1672 he lived and worked in the Baltic States . Estonia and Livonia fell to Sweden in the Treaty of Altmark in 1629 . Teuffel left his mark especially in Tallinn , Narva and Riga .
Narva in particular developed into a prosperous trading and transit city under Swedish rule. Teuffel's best-known building in Narva is the New Town Hall , which was built between 1668 and 1671 according to his plans. In 1665 Teuffel presented the first model to the city council. It was sent to Stockholm and accepted there with some changes. The town hall is one of the first baroque buildings in Estonia and also contains classical elements. It remained formative for the so-called “Dutch Baroque Era” in the architecture of Swedish Estonia. The building was badly damaged during World War II and rebuilt as a pioneer home in the 1960s .
Other architectural projects Teuffels in Narva home to the Justice mayor Schwartz had (1666, write-controversial, destroyed), the upper part of the tower of the town church with steeple (1662-1664, destroyed) and a row of shops next to the town church (1664 destroyed). Teuffel probably also built a house for the noble Baltic German Axel von Rosen in Tallinn's old town ( Pikk 28 , today the Swedish embassy ).
Teuffel went to the Livonian capital Riga in 1665 at the invitation of the Narva council there .
Since the tower of St. Peter's Church in Riga collapsed on March 11, 1666, the city council was looking for a capable “mason and master craftsman” who knew how to build the tower. In the minutes of the council from October 1666, the master builder Jürgen Teuffel is mentioned, who has just arrived from Lübeck. According to the research of the city architect Wilhelm Neumann , this Jürgen Teuffel was probably born in Lübeck. As an indication of this, it is stated that Teuffel only had to pay the citizens' money (then 5 Thaler) in Lübeck, which was valid for citizens born in Lübeck. When he acquired Lübeck citizenship in 1651, he was referred to as "Jürgen Teubell Steinmetzer". On January 2, 1651, his son Gotthard was baptized in Lübeck. There are further notes according to which he and his wife Anna (née Babbe) had other sons. Jürgen Teuffel and Asmus Teuffel. In Magister Wolf Teuffel, who wrote a memorial for the completed construction of the town hall in Narva on July 12, 1671, Neumann suspects a brother or close relative of the builder.
Wolfgang Teuffel continued Teuffel's activity in Narva. He worked there as a master until his death in 1700.
