Georg Wehling (born November 24, 1644 in Wilsnack , † March 23, 1719 in Stettin ) was a German school teacher and writer . From 1682 until his death he headed the council school in Stettin.

Life

Wehling was born the son of a shoemaker in Wilsnack . He attended schools in Havelberg , Magdeburg , Berlin and Brandenburg an der Havel , then the University of Helmstedt and the University of Wittenberg . After a few years of wandering, in 1671 he got a job as a school teacher, namely as deputy principal , in Landsberg an der Warthe . In the following year he was appointed school principal in Stolp .

In 1682 he became headmaster of the Ratsschule in Stettin , which at that time belonged to Swedish Pomerania , and remained so until his death in 1719. This school had about 150 students, but was in a poor condition. Wehling tried to raise the level of the school, but the discipline of his students in particular remained very relaxed. At that time, the students of the Ratsschule had disputes with the students of the Regium Gymnasium Carolinum , later the Marienstiftsgymnasium, because they wanted to deny them the right to carry swords.

Scientific writings

Wehling published an adaptation of Jakob Weller's grammar of ancient Greek in tabular form and some school programs . He also wrote writings on theology and logic , but these remained unpublished.

Irenophilia

Wehling wrote a school comedy entitled Irenophilia ( Peace Love ), which he had performed in Stettin in 1687, first in Latin and then in German. The anti-war play features the Persian kings Darius and Xerxes I and mixes appearances from university and soldier life from Wehling's time with the scenes played at the Persian court.

The piece is only preserved in a detailed table of contents published in print.
