Released in Obernaundorf

Jakob Weller (also: Jakob Weller von Molsdorf ; * December 5, 1602 in Markneukirchen , † July 6, 1664 in Dresden ) was a Protestant theologian . He was chief preacher at the court of the Elector of Saxony in Dresden.

Live and act

Jacob was a son of the Markneukirchen white baker Georg Weller, who came from the noble family Weller von Molsdorf , and his wife Dorothea Hesel, the daughter of the mountain preacher from Marienberg , Johannes Hesel. After he was baptized in the name of his grandfather on December 8, 1602, he attended the city school of his birthplace. From July 10, 1613 to 1620 he studied at the school in Schlaggenwald (Bohemia), attended the St. Aegiden school in Nuremberg for a year and spent a year at the grammar school in Schleusingen .

On October 1, 1623, he enrolled at the University of Wittenberg (Leucorea), worked as a tutor with Balthasar Meisner during his studies, and in 1628 Michaelis acquired the academic degree of a master's degree in philosophical sciences. On May 9, 1630, as a Magister legens, he obtained permission to read at universities and on October 19, 1632 became an adjunct of the philosophical faculty. After studying theology with Martin Trost , Jakob Martini , Paul Röber , Wilhelm Leyser I and Johann Hülsemann , he was promoted to licentiate in theology on October 1, 1635, and received his doctorate in theology on October 16, 1635. In 1635 he took over an extraordinary professorship at the theological faculty and on December 6, 1636 the full professorship for Hebrew language and oriental studies in Leucorea. Weller worked particularly intensively on Greek and Hebrew grammar and published several works on it. He was also dean of the philosophical faculty in 1636 and 1639. In Obernaundorf near Dresden on August 5, 1663, he acquired desolate land and had an estate built on it.

On March 15, 1640 Weller was ordained in Wittenberg and moved to Braunschweig as coadjutor , where he worked as superintendent from June 25, 1641 . After the death of the Saxon court preacher Matthias Hoë von Hoënegg , his position was proposed to him in 1645. In 1646 he accepted this office in Dresden. He soon became the closest advisor to the Saxon Elector Johann Georg I of Saxony on spiritual issues. In the syncretistic dispute , Weller was one of the representatives of Orthodoxy against the Irish position of Georg Calixt . Weller held the position of chief court preacher until his death in 1664. He found his final resting place on July 17, 1664 in the Sophienkirche in Dresden , where an epitaph was built for him.

In the internal theological doctrinal disputes after Luther's death in 1546, Weller always took a mediating position and warned urgently against divisions among Protestant theologians.
