Johann Andreas Lucius

Johann Andreas Lucius (born October 19, 1625 in Dresden ; † January 17, 1686 ibid) was a German Lutheran theologian.

Life

Born as the son of the deacon at the Kreuzkirche and later pastor at the St. Annenkirche Johann Lucius (born July 5, 1590 in Schönewalde; † March 2, 1652 in Dresden) and his wife Anna Schwarz († February 16, 1630 in Dresden), he attended the Kreuzschule in Dresden and was enrolled together with his brother Christian on October 16, 1644 in the matriculation of the University of Wittenberg . Supported by a council scholarship, he began his studies on April 16, 1645. After initial philosophical studies with Johannes Scharff , Johann Sperling and Konstantin Ziegra , Lucius acquired the academic degree of a master's degree in philosophical sciences on October 14, 1647, and lectured as a private lecturer from 1647. For this purpose, he obtained permission to read aloud for universities on August 13, 1648 from his Magister Legens. Lucius gave his first sermon at the Wittenberg Castle Church on October 25, 1647, so he was already a theology student at that time. His theological teachers at that time were Jakob Martini , Paul Röber , Wilhelm Leyser I , Johann Hülsemann , Johann Meisner and Abraham Calov . During his time in Wittenberg, he made a long-lasting friendship with Johann Andreas Quenstedt and became a valued lecturer.

His father died on March 2, 1652. When Lucius was in Dresden for the funeral, Aegidius Strauch I persuaded him to apply for his father's job. Lucius stopped his university ambitions, completed his trial sermon in Dresden on April 30, and was confirmed as a deacon at the Kreuzkirche on May 8. After the end of his mother's half year of grace, Lucius took up his post on September 11th and was thus the fourth generation to work as a preacher at the Kreuzkirche. During his time as a deacon, Lucius gave over 700 sermons.

In 1659 he was appointed as the first court preacher at the Electoral Saxon court, rose to the first court preacher in 1674 and took over the superintendent's position in Dresden in 1678 , which was connected with the position of senior consistorial councilor. Then he went back to Wittenberg to acquire the academic degrees to exercise these offices. He received his doctorate on November 30, 1677 as a licentiate in theology and on December 4, 1677 as a doctor of theology. After the death of Martin Geier in 1681 he took over the position of the court preacher , thereby becoming confessor of the electoral Saxon family and councilor.

Theologically, Lucius is a typical representative of Lutheran orthodoxy, for whom the Bible is a thoroughly uniform work. Nevertheless, Lucius did not appear as a great dispute theologian. For him the Catholic Church was the cause of all evil because it followed the Pope's heresy. He also rejected Calvinism and Socinianism as false doctrines. However, he always remained matter-of-fact and decent as he was a man of peace. He only relied on the truth in the Bible. A consideration of the Bible from a literary, historical, and scientific point of view was completely far removed from Lucius.

Lucius was married twice. His first marriage was in Dresden on November 9, 1652 with Maria Salome Ayrer (born January 28, 1631 in Dresden; † April 26, 1662), the daughter of the councilor and jeweler in Dresden Michael Ayrer and his third wife Maria Zinke.
