Martin Geier (also: Geyer; born April 24, 1614 in Leipzig ; † September 12, 1680 in Freiberg ) was a German Lutheran theologian.

Life

Martin Geier was born as the son of the Leipzig merchant and trader of the same name and his wife Sabina Fischer († July 27, 1615 in Leipzig). On April 8, 1618 he started school in the Leipzig council school, attended the Leipzig Nikolaischule from April 8, 1621, and the city school in Torgau from September 1625 . Prepared in this way, he enrolled at the University of Leipzig on April 10, 1628 , acquired a bachelor's degree in philosophy on March 14, 1629, moved to the University of Strasbourg in May 1631 and to the University of Jena on September 26, 1632 . After returning to Leipzig on May 2, 1633, he acquired the degree of master's degree , changed to the University of Wittenberg on June 24, 1633 and continued his theological studies there. He stayed in Jakob Weller's house . Geier also attended the lectures by Wilhelm Nigrinus , Paul Röber , Wilhelm Leyser I , Johann Hülsemann and Martin Trost . On June 19, 1636, he obtained permission to read a Magister in Wittenberg, taught the Hebrew language and returned to Leipzig in May 1637. Here Heinrich Höpfner became his further sponsor. On August 19, 1639 Geier became professor of the Hebrew language at the Leipzig University.

However Geier wanted to pursue a theological career, he was in 1643 in Leipzig Subdeacon , 1645 Deacon , 1657 Archdeacon , rising in 1659 to pastor at the Thomas Church in Leipzig on. After he had obtained his doctorate on September 15, 1645 and a doctorate in theology on July 8, 1658, Geier became an assessor of the theological faculty on September 22, 1658, as well as full professor of the same. In the winter semester of 1659 he was rector of the Leipzig Alma Mater , in the winter semester of 1662/63 he became dean of the theological faculty and on October 31, 1661 at the same time superintendent of Leipzig and consistorial councilor. On July 3, 1646 he was godfather of Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz in Leipzig's Nikolaikirche . During his time in Leipzig he set up the Collegium Gellianum, among other things . After Jakob Weller died, in 1665 the Elector Johann Georg II of Saxony appointed him to Dresden as court preacher and councilor .

Although he initially did not want to carry out the office, the elector was able to persuade him to do so by persuading him. Geier was considered a theological zealot who did not shy away from punishment. He is also a spiritual hymn writer, Old Testament exegete and edification writers emerged.

His first marriage was on June 17, 1645 in Leipzig with Margarita Schürer (born January 10, 1628 in Leipzig; † November 20, 1654 there), the daughter of the Leipzig bookseller Zacharias Schürer (born August 19, 1597 in Leipzig; † 18 January 1629 ibid) and his wife Margarita Blume (* May 17, 1607 in Wittenberg; † October 29, 1647 in Leipzig). The marriage has two sons and a daughter.
