Christian Lange

Christian Lange (* 2. December 1585 in Altenburg an der Saale (Almrich) , † May 7. . Jul / 17th May  1657 greg. In Leipzig ) was a German Lutheran theologian.

Life

Christian was born as the son of the future master brewer in Schulpforte Michael Lange and his wife Margarethe Brauer. He had received at the town school in Naumburg and the Elector of Saxony on November 14, 1600 his first education Fürstenschule Pforta related. In 1606 he began to study theology at Leipzig University , where in 1611 he acquired the academic degree of a master's degree in philosophy. He then worked as a private tutor in Knauthain and was ordained on April 14, 1614 in Altenburg, as a pastor in Meuselwitz . In November 1618 he moved to Lucka as a pastor , and in 1619 became a subdeacon and Friday preacher at St. Nicholas Church in Leipzig.

In 1621, Lange switched to the St. Thomas Church in Leipzig as a deacon , where he was promoted to archdeacon in 1628, and pastor in 1633 and thus canon in Zeitz . In the meantime, however, he also pursued his academic career: in 1620 he received his doctorate as Bacchalaureus , in 1629 fourth professor at the theological faculty , in 1630 licentiate and doctorate in theology. The theme of the disputation was: "Against the papacy on the dictum ( Mat 16:18): You are Peter ..." In the year he took over the pastorate at St. Thomas, he was also rector of the university . In 1642 he also became canon in Meißen and consistorial assessor. In 1646 Lange became superintendent in Leipzig. In the meantime he had risen to the position of first professor and senior both in the theological faculty and in the "Meißnische Nation".

His grave slab is in the Leipzig Thomaskirche.

Lange was married twice. His first marriage was on August 23, 1614 with Katharina Feiler (* August 10, 1594 in Pegau; † November 17, 1624 in Leipzig), the daughter of the Pegau superintendent Johann Feiler (* 1562 in Sulzbach; † October 23, 1626 in Pegau). There are six sons and two daughters from the marriage.

  • Samuel Lange (born February 18, 1618 in Meuselwitz, † October 10, 1667 in Leipzig), he became superintendent in Pegau and professor at the university. Leipzig
  • Christian Lange (born May 9, 1619 in Lucka near Altenburg; † March 24, 1662 in Leipzig) he became a professor of medicine at the University of Leipzig

His second marriage was on November 25, 1625 in Leipzig with Margarethe Schürer (born November 25, 1603 in Leipzig; † July 19, 1676 ibid.), The daughter of the bookseller Thomas Schürer and his wife Catharina Ulmann. The marriage resulted in ten children. One knows:
