Georg Wilhelm Overkamp (born January 9, 1707 in Greifswald or Stralsund , † July 27, 1790 in Greifswald) was a German orientalist .

Life

Georg Wilhelm Overkamp was the son of a merchant who was first council cellar master in Stralsund and later in Greifswald. His mother came from the respected Greifswald merchant family Weissenborn. He attended the Greifswald city school and then studied at the universities of Greifswald and Jena . He was particularly concerned with the oriental languages . In Jena he received the license to teach as Magister Legens and in 1736 became an adjunct of the philosophical faculty. After becoming known through various academic papers, he moved to the University of Greifswald as an adjunct, where in 1739 he received the full professorship for oriental languages. In 1743 he was rector of the university, in the last years of his life its senior.

Overkamp published various dissertations. In Greifswald he founded a university scholarship (1787) as well as a poor and free school. He was buried in the Neuenkirchen cemetery , where a memorial was erected for him in 1886.

The son Timotheus Christian Wilhelm Overkamp (1743-1828) came from the marriage with Hedwig Ulrika Lütkemann, daughter of the Greifswald general superintendent Timotheus Lütkemann , in 1740 .
