Georg von Kees

Georg Ritter von Kees (born November 24, 1822 in Buda (Ofen), today Budapest ; † July 9, 1906 in Pezinok (Bösing), then Austria-Hungary ) was an Austrian general, head of the Theresian military academy and temporary head of the records office , of the military intelligence service of the Danube Monarchy.

Life

After being retired from the Theresian Military Academy, the son of a high imperial official was assigned to an infantry regiment and then to the General Staff in 1843 . Under Field Marshal Radetzky he took part in the Battle of Custozza in 1848 , in 1849 in the Battle of Novara and in the conquest of Milan . Kees participated in the war between Austria and the Kingdom of Sardinia-Piedmont in 1859 on the staff of Commander-in-Chief Ferencz József Gyulay .

In 1861 he was transferred to the registry office, the Austrian military secret service, which he took over from Anton von Kalik in 1864 . This was connected with the promotion to colonel. He participated in the Austro-Prussian War in 1866 at the headquarters of the Northern Army, which was defeated in the Battle of Königgrätz . After the end of the war, a court martial was initiated against the commander of the Northern Army, Ludwig von Benedek, and some of his generals . Kees was replaced as head of the registry office and transferred to the infantry .

In 1868 Kees was appointed commander of the Theresian Military Academy in Wiener Neustadt . After two years he was relieved of this position "at his own request" and took over various commands in Hungary. Meanwhile a field marshal lieutenant , he took part in the occupation of Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1878 as commandant of a division . In 1881 he became the military commander of Košice , in 1882 he received his own regiment (kuk Infantry Regiment No. 85). In 1887 he retired with the rank of Feldzeugmeister .
