Georg von Opel Prize

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Georg von Opel Prize , which was awarded by Adam Opel AG , honored athletes and volunteers for achievements that were made without the expectation of material consideration or for the benefit of society. The award is named after the sportsman and humanist Georg von Opel .

The award was given according to a specific motto, e.g. B. “The Silent Winners”, “Athletes in Social Responsibility”, “Volunteers” or “Unforgettable Masters”. The focus was not always on top athletic performance, but on social commitment or, for example, the special personal deprivations that were taken on without the prospect of major financial gain.

The prize was launched in 1996 and endowed with a sum of 50,000 DM. A jury chaired by Franz Beckenbauer determines the winners. It was first awarded in 1997 and most recently in 2003.
