George of Venediger
Georg von Venediger (also Georg Venetus ) (* in Venedia in the later district of Mohrungen / East Prussia ; † November 3, 1574 in Liebemühl ) was a Lutheran theologian and reformer.
Life
Venediger came from the old Prussian aristocracy, who established the knight seat Venedien near Liebemühl in Prussia and took the name Venediger. His parents were Martin von Venediger and Katharina von Rauschken. The date of birth is unknown.
During his school days in Königsberg (Prussia) he received lessons from Johannes Poliander . He probably studied in Königsberg and Wittenberg , where he received his doctorate in theology on October 2, 1550 . He took over the church service on Philipp Melanchthon's recommendation at the Marienkirche in Rostock . At the same time he was appointed professor at the university there. From 1551 to 1557 he was professor of theology in Königsberg, where he was dismissed after six years due to his resistance to the Osiandrische doctrine and he returned to Rostock.
He went on visitations with his colleague Tilemann Heßhusen . There were annoying appearances. In 1558, Duke Philipp of Pomerania appointed him superintendent of the Kolberg-Cammin monastery. After the death of the last pre-Reformation bishop Erasmus von Manteuffel-Arnhausen and the two Reformation bishops Bartholomäus Swawe and Martin Weiher , he had to introduce the Reformation in this area, which was still an old believer. In 1563 the duke appointed him superintendent general. As such, he took part in the state parliament in Stettin in 1563.
The church ordinance passed there, which was supposed to replace the old one from 1535, had been worked out by Jacob Runge , Paul vom Rode and him. He turned down Rode's successor as Superintendent of Stettin. Then Duke Albrecht I of Brandenburg-Ansbach appointed him Bishop of Pomesania in 1567 . His successor in Kolberg-Cammin was Petrus Edeling .
Von Venediger held this office until his death. He was introduced to his office by the Bishop of Samland, Joachim Mörlin .
