George Kuo
George Ching-Hung Kuo is a Taiwanese -US virologist . Kuo discovered the hepatitis C virus in 1989 together with Qui-Lim Choo , Michael Houghton and Daniel W. Bradley .
Life
Kuo graduated from Taiwan National University in 1961 and received his PhD in molecular biology from Albert Einstein College of Medicine , New York City, in 1972 . From 1981 he worked for the Chiron Corporation . It had been known since the 1970s that many cases of infectious hepatitis were not caused by the two viruses known at the time, hepatitis A virus and hepatitis B virus . From 1982 onwards, a research group led by Michael Houghton at Chiron, in which Kuo was also involved, concentrated on the search for the pathogen causing "Non-A-Non-B (NANB) hepatitis". After years of work in 1989, the research group was able to isolate a short piece of nucleic acid from the plasma of chimpanzees with NANB hepatitis, which turned out to be part of a previously unknown virus. This was later called the "hepatitis C virus".
Kuo is married to his colleague Carol Lan-Fang Kuo; his daughter Irene Carol Kuo is an Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at The Johns Hopkins Wilmer Eye Institute .
