George Digby Barker

Sir George Digby Barker , GCB ( October 9, 1833 - April 15, 1914 ) was a British officer in the British Army , who was last as a lieutenant general in China and Hong Kong between 1890 and 1895 and from May to December 1891 Hong Kong administrator acted. Life

On January 21, 1853 he joined the 78th Infantry Regiment (Highlanders) Regiment of Foot as Ensign and took part in the Anglo-Persian War (November 1, 1856 to April 4, 1857) and in the suppression of the Indian uprising of 1857 . On November 5, 1858 he was first lieutenant (Lieutenant) Regimental Adjutant of the 78th (Highlanders) Regiment of Foot . On 10 May 1861 he was in the line infantry Regiment 19th Regiment of Foot to Hauptmann (Captain) transported. He was on 17 September 1861 to 26 November 1861 brevet of major of the 19th Regiment of Foot . On April 23, 1872, he was awarded the rank of lieutenant colonel of the Line Infantry Regiment 64th (2nd Staffordshire) Regiment of Foot . On January 21, 1874 he was promoted to major . In April 1890, Barker succeeded Major General James Bevan Edwards as Commander British Troops in China and Hong Kong and held this post until his replacement by Major General Wilsone Black in February 1895. After the end of the Tenure of Governor George William Des Voeux , he also served as Administrator of Hong Kong from May 1891 until Governor William Robinson took office in December 1891 .

In June 1896, Lieutenant General Barker became governor of Bermuda, succeeding Lieutenant General Thomas Lyons . He held this office until January 1902, when Lieutenant General Henry LeGuay Geary took over as his successor. At the same time he was commander in chief of the troops in Bermuda. On May 23, 1900 he was beaten Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath and from then on carried the suffix "Sir".

As the successor to the late General Francis Peyton , he was on February 7, 1905 Colonel Regiment of the Prince of Wales's Line Infantry Regiment (North Staffordshire Regiment) and remained in this function until his replacement by Major General Thomas Francis Lloyd in 1911. He succeeded Lieutenant General Mostyn de la Poer Beresford from 1911 until his death, Colonel of the Seaforth Highlanders Line Infantry Regiment , (Ross-shire Buffs, The Duke of Albany's) . On 14 June 1912 he was also Grand Cross ( Knight Grand Cross ) awarded the Order of the Bath. His successor there was Major General Robert Hunter Murray .
