George Ernest Halpenny

George Ernest Halpenny PC (born June 14, 1903 in Plantagenet , Ontario , † May 10, 1974 ) was a Canadian politician of the Progressive Conservative Party (PC) who was a member of the House of Commons for almost six years . He also served as Minister without Portfolio from 1960 to 1962 and then Secretary of State for Canada between 1962 and 1963 in the 18th Canadian Cabinet of Prime Minister John Diefenbaker .

Life

After attending school, Halpenny studied pharmacy , which he completed with a Bachelor in Pharmacy (B.Pharm.). He then worked as a chemist . He joined the Canadian Army during World War II and served as a lieutenant colonel in the Royal Canadian Armored Corps between 1942 and 1945 . In the election of June 10, 1957 , Halpenny was elected as a candidate of the progressive-conservative party for the first time as a member of the House of Commons and represented the constituency of London until April 7, 1963 .

Following the PC's electoral victory in the June 10, 1957 general election, Halpenny became Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister for National Health and Welfare, Jay Monteith , on August 7, 1957 , and held that junior ministerial post until February 1, 1958 January and July 18, 1959 Chairman of the House of Commons Special Committee on Broadcasting and from January 14 to August 10, 1960 Chairman of the House of Commons Special Committee on Defense Expenditures.

On October 11, 1960, Halpenny was appointed as part of a cabinet reshuffle by Prime Minister John Diefenbaker in the 18th Canadian Cabinet and was there until August 8, 1962 Minister without Portfolio. He then served as Secretary of State for Canada between August 9, 1962 and the end of Diefenbaker's tenure on April 21, 1963, and as such was also head of the government chancellery in the cabinet rank.

After leaving the government and the House of Commons, he retired from political life.
