George F. Vande Woude (* 1935 in New York City ) is an American molecular biologist and biochemist specializing in cancer research . He was able to contribute to the elucidation of the molecular basis of malignant transformation , carcinogenesis and the formation of metastases . His research focuses on the function of two gene products of proto-oncogenes : c-Met receptor tyrosine kinase and its ligand, hepatocyte growth factor, and Mos serine / threonine kinase .

Vande Woude earned both a Masters (1962) and a Ph.D. (1964) from Rutgers University . As a postdoctoral fellow, he worked at the Plum Island Animal Disease Center , a research facility for the United States Department of Agriculture . From 1972 he worked for the National Cancer Institute (NCI) as head of the department of biochemistry of oncoviruses . In 1983 he became director of the basic research program at the NCI's Frederick Cancer Research and Development Center . From 1995 he was also a consultant, then director of the overall program for basic research at the NCI. In 1999 he became the founding director of the Van Andel Research Institute in Grand Rapids , Michigan . In 2009 he resigned from the post as director, but retained the leadership of the department for molecular oncology there.

In 1989 Vande Woude received the Pasarow Award for Cancer Research. In 1993 he was elected a member of the National Academy of Sciences , in 2006 of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and in 2013 a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science .

Vande Woude was a co-editor of Oncogene and Advances in Cancer Research . He himself published more than 300 scientific publications .
