George Japha

Georg Japha (first name also: George or Georg Joseph ; born August 28, 1834 in Königsberg (Prussia) ; † February 25, 1892 in Cologne ) was a German violinist .

Life

Georg Japha received his education from 1850 to 1853 at the Conservatorium der Musik in Leipzig under Ferdinand David and Raimund Dreyschock and later in Paris under Jean-Delphin Alard . Between 1855 and 1857 he played in the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra , and found his first permanent position in Frankfurt am Main as the first violinist in the orchestra of the municipal theater. From 1853 to 1863 he worked as a teacher in his home town of Königsberg, where he organized chamber music concerts with Adolf Jensen .

From Königsberg he went on concert tours, including to Russia in the winter of 1857/58 and to London in 1863. In the same year he was appointed concertmaster in Cologne's Gürzenich Orchestra and as a violin teacher at the Rheinische Musikschule in Cologne. Emil Kreuz , Friedrich August Stock and Carl Venth were among his students .

In addition to his teaching activity until 1892, he continued to perform as a soloist and in quartets (also together with Gustav Hollaender ).

Georg Japha was married to his cousin Meta Japha (sister of Louise Japha ). Their common grave is located in the Melaten cemetery in Cologne (hallway 52 no. 45-46).
