George Katona

George Katona , d. i. György Katona ; also: Georg Katona (born November 6, 1901 in Budapest , Austria-Hungary ; died June 18, 1981 in Berlin ) was an American psychologist and economist of Austro-Hungarian origin.

Life

Katona emigrated from communist Hungary in 1919 and studied psychology at the University of Göttingen . He received his doctorate in 1921 under Georg Elias Müller . He emigrated to the USA in 1933 after the start of the Nazi era . At the end of his life he was from the Free University of Berlin with the honorary doctorate awarded and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences added.

Katona was one of the co-editors of the magazine Der Deutsche Volkswirt , Berlin , from 1926 to 1933 , and from 1929 to 1933 German correspondent for the Wall Street Journal .

In the 1940s he developed the University of Michigan Consumer Sentiment Index , which measures the propensity to consume in private households in the USA.
