George Clyde Kell (born August 23, 1922 in Swifton , Arkansas , † March 24, 2009 ibid) was an American baseball player in Major League Baseball .

biography

George Kell began his career as a third baseman with the Philadelphia Athletics in the American League on September 28, 1943. In 1946 he moved to the Detroit Tigers . In 1949 he won his only title for the player with the best batting average with .3429 ahead of Ted Williams of the Boston Red Sox who came in .3428. With this very narrow success - normally the batting average is only calculated to three places after the decimal point - he also prevented Williams from winning the Triple Crown . A year later he led the American League with 218 hits and 56 doubles, but only came second behind Billy Goodman of the Boston Red Sox with .340 . In 1952 he moved to the Red Sox. Of these, he joined the Chicago White Sox before playing his last game in the Major Leagues with the Baltimore Orioles on September 14, 1957. In addition to his achievements as a batsman, his field game skills were also outstanding.

After his playing career, he worked on the Detroit Tigers' broadcast team and became the owner of a car dealership. In 1983 he was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee .
