George Lowe (climber)

Wallace George Lowe , CNZM , OBE (born January 15, 1924 in Hastings , New Zealand , † March 20, 2013 in Ripley , Derbyshire , England ) was a New Zealand mountaineer , documentary filmmaker and author .

Life

He was an expedition member of the first successful ascent of Mount Everest in 1953 together with Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay . Together with Hillary he also took part in the Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition (1955-1958) and was a member of the team that managed to cross the Antarctic continent for the first time by land. In his honor, the Mount Lowe in the East Antarctic Coats Land named.

As a director, he staged two Oscar- nominated documentaries, and from 1943 to 1973 he was involved in one and a half dozen productions as a cameraman.
