Across the Antarctic (original title: Antarctic Crossing ) is a British documentary by George Lowe from 1958. The film is about Vivian Fuchs ' Antarctic expedition  until he met Edmund Hillary at the South Pole . The film was nominated for an Oscar in 1959 for best documentary .

action

George Lowe accompanied the Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition led by Vivian Fuchs. The expedition was supposed to cross the Antarctic continent via the South Pole for the first time. After the expedition arrived on the Antarctic coast in 1955, only base camps were set up until 1957. Around Christmas 1957, the group around Fuchs was to meet with a second group around Edmund Hillary. Fuchs was stopped by adverse weather and did not arrive at the South Pole until January 15, 1958.

background

Lowe had accompanied Hillary on the first ascent of Mount Everest and was a close friend of Hillary. His documentary film about this Himalayan expedition had already earned him a nomination at the 1954 Academy Awards .

reception

Filmdienst.de judged:

"The sober documentation conveys vivid impressions of the scope and the technical mastery of the company as well as of the landscape of the sixth 'continent.'"

Becky Pemberton thought Lowe's pictures of this Antarctic expedition were less impressive than the documentary of his ascent of Mount Everest , but they were still overwhelming.
