from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

George McCartney Chippendale (born April 18, 1921 in Sydney , New South Wales , † February 16, 2010 in Canberra , Australian Capital Territory ) was an Australian botanist and geobotanist . His botanical author abbreviation is “ Chippend. ".

Early years

Chippendale was born in Paddington, Sydney, the oldest of six children. He left school at the age of 14 and initially worked in a cloth trade. In 1936 his mother found him a job in the service of the Royal Botanic Gardens in Sydney. He stayed there until he was drafted into military service in World War II .

Working life

After the end of the war in 1945, he began, meanwhile married, to study botany at the University of Sydney , which he completed with a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.). The Royal Botanic Gardens supported him during his studies and further career. His work there also included identifying plants that visitors brought with them.

In 1954, Chippendale accepted a position as a taxonomic botanist in the Northern Territory and moved with his family to Alice Springs . At that time there was no publicly accessible herbarium there , but only a small collection of plant specimens that came from CSIRO employees and official veterinarians. With his staff, Chippendale collected plants throughout the Northern Territory and thus built up what is now the Northern Territory Herbarium .

In 1966 his professional path as chief botanist led him to the "Forestry Research Institute" in Canberra , today the forest research department of the CSIRO. There he dealt mainly with the genus Eucalyptus .

In 1972/1973 he was posted to the Royal Botanic Gardens in Kew (London) for 12 months as "Australian Botanical Liaison Officer" . From there he was able to study eucalyptus specimens deposited there while traveling to various herbaria in Europe.

Family life and death

George McCartney Chippendale married Joan in 1943. They had three children together.

Chippendale died on February 16, 2010 in Canberra at the age of 89.
