George Nelson Lester
George Nelson Lester (born March 13, 1824 in Abbeville County , South Carolina , † March 30, 1892 ) was an American lawyer and politician and officer in the Confederate Army . The Congressman Hiram Parks Bell (1827-1907) was his brother.
Career
George Nelson Lester, son of Mary Sims and Richard Henry Lester, was born in Abbeville District (now Abbeville County) about nine years after the end of the British-American War . Nothing is known about his youth. At some point he moved to Georgia . He studied law and began practicing law after receiving his license. In 1858 he was a member of the Georgia House of Representatives . After the outbreak of the civil war , he enlisted in the Confederate Army . Lester was a colonel in the Georgia 7th Infantry Regiment . On October 8, 1862, he was wounded at the Battle of Perryville , Kentucky . In the process he lost his right arm. He was then elected to the Second Confederate Congress for the eighth constituency of Georgia , where he served from 1864 until the end of the Confederation . He was on the Commission of Immigration. After the end of the war he resumed his work as a lawyer. He was Attorney General of Georgia from 1890 until his death in 1892 . His body was buried in the Old City Cemetery in Marietta, Georgia.
