George Nevill (e), 5th Baron Bergavenny KG , PC (born October 18, 1469 in Abergavenny , Wales , † June 13, 1535 in Birling , Kent ) was an English nobleman , military commander and politician.

Life

Neville was the eldest son of Georg Neville, 4th Baron Bergavenny (1440-1492) and his wife Lady Margaret (1453-1485), daughter of Sir Hugh Fenne, as well as the eldest brother of Edward Neville, the childhood friend of the future English King Henry VIII .

Neville studied at Balliol College , Oxford and came to London in 1483 as a secretary to the royal court . Under King Henry VII Tudor he fought on June 17, 1497 in the Battle of Deptford Bridge against the Cornish insurgents. As Constable of Dover Castle , he had the defenses reinforced by fortifying the castle and building a moat. 1513 Neville became a Knight of the Garter ( Knight of the Order of the Garter appointed) and three years later he was in the Privy Council appeal.

In 1521 Cardinal Wolsey charged Neville with treason. Also charged was his father-in-law Edward Stafford, 3rd Duke of Buckingham ; he was sentenced to death and beheaded on May 17, 1521 on Tower Hill . Neville was released for lack of evidence in 1522 and regained the king's favor in 1530. In 1534 he was briefly Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports .
