George Ramsay, 8th Earl of Dalhousie
George Ramsay, 8th Earl of Dalhousie (around 1730 - November 4, 1787 ) was a British nobleman and politician.
Family and title
He was the second-born son of George Ramsay, Lord Ramsay († 1739) from his marriage to Jean Maule († 1769). His older brother was Charles Ramsay, 7th Earl of Dalhousie . Upon his childless death on January 29, 1764 he inherited his Scottish nobility title as 8th Earl of Dalhousie .
On July 30, 1767 he married Elisabeth Glen (around 1739-1807), the daughter of Andrew Glen († 1764) and a niece of James Glenn of Longcroft , between 1738 and 1755 governor of South Carolina . With this he had a daughter and four sons. He was also the father of an illegitimate daughter. With the death of his maternal uncle William Maule, 1st Earl Panmure , Ramsay inherited the lands of the Maule of Panmure family , including Brechin Castle and Braikie Castle in Angus , in 1782 . After his death these passed to his second eldest son William , while the eldest son George inherited the title of Earl of Dalhousie .
Professional background
In 1757 Ramsay was admitted to the bar in Scotland . From 1767 to 1769 he was the Grand Master of the Scottish Freemasons . Between 1774 and 1781 he was a representative peer for Scotland in the British House of Lords . From 1775 to 1782 he also held the office of Lord of the Police . Ramsay was also High Commissioner of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland from 1777 to 1782 .
