George Robert Gleig [spr. glegg] (born April 20, 1796 in Stirling , Scotland, † July 9, 1888 ) was a Scottish writer and soldier.

Gleig was the son of Primate George Gleig and his wife Janet Hamilton. After completing his school years in Glasgow , he began to study at Balliol College ( University of Oxford ). When Wellington won its first victory in Spain on June 21, 1813 ( Battle of Vitoria ), Gleig broke off his studies and joined the army in the same year.

The following year Gleig fought in the British-American War in the United States and was badly wounded in the storming of Washington, DC . He returned to Oxford in 1819 and successfully completed his studies there with the titles “BA” and “MA”. In the same year he also married.

1820 Gleig was the Anglican Church ordained and got a job in 1822 as curate ( quasi parish ) in Ash ( Kent ); later he was appointed rector of Ivychurch (Kent). In 1844 he was appointed chaplain at the Chelsea Hospital. When Gleig was appointed chaplain general of the army in 1846, an education plan for the soldiers was drawn up under his leadership. He reached the high point of his career with his appointment as inspector general of military schools; associated with this were benefices from St Paul .

In 1875 Gleig resigned from all his offices and retired. For the rest of his life he worked as a writer, which he began in 1825 with his autobiographical work "The subaltern".
