George Underwood (born February 5, 1947 ) is a British artist and musician. He is best known for designing album covers for numerous bands in the 1970s and working with his longtime friend, singer-songwriter David Bowie .

life and career

George Underwood attended Bromley Technical School , where, along with classmates David Bowie and Peter Frampton, he developed an interest in music. Underwood and Bowie's first band together, George and the Dragons, was short-lived as Underwood hit Bowie in the left eye during a fight over a girl with a ring on her finger. This resulted in Bowie's left pupil paralysis and his distinctive appearance. The injury didn't affect their friendship, and Underwood later recorded an album with Bowie and her new band, The King Bees . Later, Underwood tried to make a music career with a solo record under the name Calvin James .

After Underwood decided that the music business was nothing for him, Underwood returned to art school and worked in design studios as an illustrator . Initially he specialized in fantasy , horror and science fiction book covers. Since many of his former colleagues were still in the music business, they asked him to create works of art for their record covers. Underwood established himself as a freelance artist and leading art illustrator, working for musicians and bands such as T. Rex ( Futuristic Dragon) , The Fixx and Procol Harum ( Shine On Brightly ), Mott the Hoople , ( All the Young Dudes ) and David Bowie ( Hunky Dory , The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars ) designed record covers. During this time, he also produced hundreds of book covers , advertisements , portraits and drawings.

He also acted in the documentary , David Bowie & the Story of Ziggy Stardust, the BBC (Cymru Wales) from 2012.
