George Walsh
George Walsh (born March 18, 1889 in New York City , New York , † June 13, 1981 in Pomona , California ) was an American actor .
life and career
George Walsh was born in New York as the younger brother of the future Hollywood director Raoul Walsh . In 1911 he graduated from the High School of Commerce, where he excelled in sports such as baseball and swimming. He later also attended Fordham and Georgetown University . He followed his brother Raoul to Hollywood and made his first films there in 1915, including the controversial film classic The Birth of a Nation , where he only had a small role. In the following year, however, he had a slightly larger role as the groom of Kana in the epic film Intolerance , which, as in The Birth of a Nation, was directed by David Wark Griffith . In the following years, the dark-haired, handsome Walsh established himself as a popular leading actor, both in comedies and in adventure films. In 1919 he also directed The Seventh Person with himself in the lead role, but it stayed only with that film.
The star made a number of successful films at Fox Studios , most of which were later destroyed by fire and are now lost. In Rosita he was seen in 1923 under the direction of Ernst Lubitsch as a partner of Mary Pickford . Shortly afterwards he was hired for the title role in the large-scale production Ben Hur . He had already shot the film halfway in Italy with director Charles Brabin when Walsh was replaced by rising star Ramón Novarro . Walsh learned of his dismissal only through the newspaper, which disappointed him badly. With the start of talkies at the end of the 1920s, Walsh increasingly had to be content with supporting roles, even if he was still mentioned in the credits. His most important sound film appearance was in Me and My Pal (1932) alongside Spencer Tracy and Joan Bennett .
After around 80 films, he retired in 1936 and then managed his brother's numerous horses, which, among other things, were bred and competed on racetracks. George Walsh was married to actress Seena Owen (1894-1966) from 1916 to 1924 , and the marriage ended in divorce. He died of pneumonia in 1981, seven months after his brother, at the age of 92 and was buried in San Gabriel Cemetery in San Gabriel .
