Georges-Hilaire Dupont

Georges-Hilaire Dupont OMI (born November 16, 1919 in Virey , France, † January 29, 2020 in Saint-Hilaire-du-Harcouët ) was a French religious and Roman Catholic bishop of Pala in Chad.

Life

Georges-Hilaire Dupont received the sacrament of ordination for the Order of the Oblates on May 9, 1943 in La Brosse-Montceaux (Seine-et-Marne) . Then he was asked for the compulsory labor service in Austria, returned and in 1946 was sent to Chad, a region where there was no missionary before.

On January 16, 1964 he was appointed by Pope Paul VI. appointed Bishop of the Diocese of Pala in Chad . The Archbishop of Fort-Lamy Paul-Pierre-Yves Dalmais SJ donated him episcopal ordination on May 1st of the same year ; Co- consecrators were Armand Clabaut OMI , Apostolic Coadjutor Vicar of Churchill-Baie d'Hudson , and Yves-Joseph-Marie Plumey OMI , Bishop of Garoua . As a bishop he took part in the Second Vatican Council.

For almost 30 years he ensured a Christian presence there among the Chadian people and the French colonists in an area with great Islamic influence. In 1973 he was made Knight of the Legion of Honor for his missionary and humanitarian commitment .

On June 28, 1975, Pope Paul VI. his early resignation for health reasons. He then worked as a country priest in the Seine-Maritime , Vaucluse and Corsica departments until 1997 .
