Georges Fontené (born September 23, 1848 in Rousies , Département Nord , France ; † April 7, 1923 in Paris ) was a French mathematician who mainly dealt with algebraic geometry and algebra .

Life

In 1875 he received his agrégation and became a high school teacher . He taught in Belfort , Douai and Rouen until he switched to the Collège Rollin (today: Lycée Jacques Decour) in Paris . In 1903 Fontené was appointed Inspecteur général de l'Instruction Publique (since 1980: Inspecteur général de l'Éducation nationale ). He was also a longstanding editorial staff member of the Nouvelles Annales de Mathématiques .

He published in the Nouvelles Annales de Mathématiques a large number of treatises on pure and analytical geometry , hyperspaces , elliptic functions and integrals , plane algebraic curves as well as space curves and linear equations .

In 1897 Fontené received the honorable mention of the Lobachevsky Prize of the Kazan State University for his work Hyperespace à (n - 1) dimensions .

In linear algebra he has proven a theorem about the solvability of inhomogeneous systems of linear equations , the Fontené-Rouché theorem , independently of Eugène Rouché , with whom there was a dispute over priority.
