Georges Loinger
Georges Uriel Joseph Loinger (born August 29, 1910 in Strasbourg ; † December 28, 2018 in Paris ) was a French sports teacher and member of the Resistance . At the age of 105 he received the Federal Cross of Merit on July 12, 2016 .
Life
Georges Loinger, from a Jewish family from Strasbourg, was a physical education teacher and soldier in World War II . As a prisoner of war in Moosburg from 1940 to 1941, he managed to escape in 1941. After returning to France, he joined the Resistance .
During the German occupation of France , he saved at least 350 Jewish boys and girls from deportation to Auschwitz by taking them across the border to safe Switzerland . At the same time he was also involved in the children's charity Œuvre de secours aux enfants .
Georges Loinger was buried in the Montparnasse cemetery in Paris.
family
Loinger's sister Fanny Loinger (1915–1992) and his cousin Marcel Marceau were also Resistance fighters . His brother Charles Loinger , ten years his junior, is a French-Israeli agronomist. The Israeli singer Jardena Arasi (* 1951) is his niece.
Honors
He became an honorary citizen of Strasbourg on October 24, 2014 , and was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on July 12, 2016 .
He also received numerous other orders such as the Médaille de la Résistance , the Ordre des Palmes Académiques , the Croix de guerre 1939-1945 and was appointed commander of the Legion of Honor .
