Georges Thinès

Georges Thinès (born February 10, 1923 in Liège , † October 25, 2016 in Court-Saint-Etienne ) was a Belgian psychologist and writer .

Life and accomplishments

Georges Thinès was born on February 10, 1923 as the child of a mining engineer in Liège, Belgium, in the province of the same name . From 1944 to 1946 he served in the Belgian section of the Royal Navy . Then he studied philosophy and psychology in Leuven .

In 1959 he wrote his first lyric work, Poésies , and began his career as a writer. His first prose work, Les Effigies (portraits), was published in 1970. His literary work includes poetry , novels , short stories , novels , plays and essays .

Despite his success as a writer, he did not neglect his scientific career. In 1955 he received a doctorate in psychology and in 1957 a bachelor's degree in philosophy. In 1963 he became a full professor at the Université catholique de Louvain and taught ethology , experimental psychology, phenomenological psychology and philosophical anthropology. In 1967 he founded the psychological faculty and was its dean until 1972. In 1989 he was visiting professor at the Collège de France and was a corresponding member of the Muséum national d'histoire naturelle in Paris .

It is also worth mentioning that Thinès co-founded the symphonic orchestra of the Université catholique de Louvain. There he played the first violins under the direction of Louis Weemaels , the former conductor of the Belgian State Orchestra ( Orchester national de Belgique ).

Awards

In 1971 he received the Francqui Prize for his scientific achievements, in 1974 the Prix ​​Victor Rossel for his literary work. On June 10, 1978 he was elected to succeed Marcel Thiry as a member of the Académie royale de langue et de littérature françaises de Belgique . In 1991 Thinès was awarded another literary prize, the Prix ​​Bernheim . In 2004 he received the Prix ​​Renaissance de la Nouvelle . He was also awarded an honorary doctorate from the Université catholique de Louvain.
