Chronicle and description

St. George

The town church of St. Georg is a Gothic brick building that was first mentioned in 1291. In 1329 the Margrave Ludwig von Brandenburg granted the monastery in Eldena west of Grabow the right of patronage over the Grabow parish church.

The oldest preserved part is the rectangular two-bay choir . The buttresses on the east side between two windows and axially at the corners are still preserved . Presumably a two-aisled hall was planned.

In the 14th century, a three-aisled hall with three bays and eight corner pillars was built as a nave. In the 15th century the mighty, three-storey, rectangular west tower was built from field stones (basement) and bricks.

On June 3, 1725, a large city fire destroyed the castle, town hall, church and large parts of the city. The vaults of the church are burned out. They have been replaced by wooden vaults in the choir and by a flat ceiling with coves in the nave . The installation of the galleries in the 19th century significantly affected the original spatial impression.

The upper tower floors were not rebuilt until 1906–1910. It received a gable roof with two Gothic-style, ornate stepped gables and a pointed roof turret with a lantern .

Furnishing

The so-called Grabower Altar by Master Bertram von Minden, who created it around 1379/83, comes from the St. Petri Church in Hamburg . The parish of St. Petri gave it to the Grabower Church as a gift after the fire in 1725. The Grabower Altar has been in the Hamburger Kunsthalle since 1900 . In its place there is a Gothic-style installation with a painting by Fritz Greve from 1906.

The wooden pulpit dates from 1555. There are New Testament reliefs on the fillings of the basket . The wrought iron baptismal stand dates from 1785 and is said to have been made by August Niens. The wrought iron chandelier dates from 1742. The organ is a work by Friedrich Friese III from 1885 with 25 stops on two manuals and pedal .
