Certified nature and landscape conservationist

Certified nature and landscape conservationist is a professional advancement training according to § 56 Vocational Training Act , leads to the only non-academic profession in Germany with state recognition in nature conservation and is therefore an additional qualification for well-trained specialists. The state recognition of the profession took place on March 14, 1998 with the entry into force of the Further Education Ordinance (Federal Law Gazette No. 14 of March 13, 1998) for "Certified Nature and Landscape Maintainer". Most of the nature and landscape conservationists are referred to as " rangers ", since many graduates have subsequently decided on a career in one of the 15 national parks or another large conservation area .

Activity and tasks

Among other things, nature and landscape conservationists look after protected landscape areas , work in public relations, plan landscape conservation work and implement them. They also plan and hold information events on nature conservation and landscape management.

Areas of application and work areas

Certified nature and landscape conservationists find employment primarily

  • with state, district or municipal administrations, z. B. in environmental agencies,
  • in horticulture and landscaping companies and in agriculture and forestry,
  • in national parks, biosphere reserves, nature reserve administrations and nature parks,
  • in botanical or zoological gardens.

Content and duration of the training

The corresponding training content is fixed by the nationwide uniform regulation and cannot be changed individually. The apprenticeship as nature and landscape conservationist is a further training occupation that takes a year of training part-time. During this period, at least 640 lessons are given. There are four main areas of training to become a nature and landscape conservationist: 

  1. the basics of nature conservation and landscape management, 
  2. visitor care and information activities, 
  3. various measures of nature conservation and landscape management as well 
  4. Basic knowledge in the areas of economics, law and social affairs.

Admission requirements

Admission to the examination is regulated by a nationwide uniform regulation and provides two options.

The training is primarily based on successfully completed training in a green profession in the fields of agriculture , forestry and water management . Specifically, these are the training professions of farmer , gardener , forester , district hunter , winemaker , fishkeeper , hydraulic engineer and animal farmer specializing in sheep farming . At least three years of professional experience in one of the professions mentioned must be proven.

In addition, anyone with comparable qualifications can be admitted to the examination. These can, for example, have been acquired through years of voluntary nature conservation work, through professional experience in landscape conservation or as a nature and landscape watchdog.
