Gerald Wiemers (born May 1, 1941 in Leipzig ) is a German archivist and historian .

Life

Wiemers studied history and modern languages ​​at the University of Halle from 1960 . After he had passed the state examination as a graduate historian in 1965, a two-year study of archival science and historical auxiliary sciences at the Institute for Archival Science in Potsdam followed . In 1967 he passed the state examination as a scientific archivist (diploma archivist). In 1984 the doctorate A to Dr. phil. at the Technical University of Dresden . In 2003 he completed his habilitation in history at the Technical University of Chemnitz . Director of the Leipzig University Archives since 1992 , he was appointed associate professor for archival science and modern history in 2002 by Leipzig University . In 2006 he retired.

Wiemers deals with the student resistance in the time of National Socialism and since the turnaround and peaceful revolution in the GDR with the student resistance against the SED regime. He is a member of the Commission for University History and the Commission for Rehabilitation for unlawfully revoked academic degrees between 1933 and 1989 at the University of Leipzig. From 1985 to 2005 his main field of work was the history of physics, in particular the life and work of Werner Heisenberg .

Memberships

Wiemers has worked for the Saxon Academy of Sciences in Leipzig for decades . Since 1989 he has been an elected member of its historical commission. He was vice chairman (1992-2000) and acting chairman (2001). In the Association of German Archivists (VdA) he was chairman of Section 8, Archives of Universities and Scientific Institutions from 1995 to 2004. He is a member of the Theodor Litt Society (Leipzig), the Heisenberg Society (Munich) and the Society for the History of Universities and Science.
