Life

Scheurleer was one of the first important tennis players in his country. He reached the semi-finals in singles at the Olympic Intermediate Games in Athens in 1906 , in which he was defeated by Maurice Germot in two sets. From 1908 to 1921 he won the Dutch championships nine times in doubles or mixed. In 1919 and 1920 he took part in the Wimbledon Championships and in 1920 reached the third round in singles.

In 1922 he lost a leg in a serious motorcycle accident, which is why he had to end his tennis career. He stayed in tennis as a coach, wrote several tennis books and worked as a sports journalist. Scheurleer trained among others Cornelia Bouman , who won the title at the French Championships in 1927 , and Hendrik Timmer . He also had an influence on Dutch field hockey, for which he introduced a new, softer ball.

Scheurleer died in 1948 at the age of 62 in his hometown of The Hague .
