Gerardus Huysmans
Gerardus Wilhelmus Maria Huysmans (born April 29, 1902 in Eindhoven , Province of North Brabant ; † March 18, 1948 in The Hague ) was a Dutch bank manager and politician of the Roomsch-Katholieke Staatspartij (RKSP) and, since December 22, 1945, of the Katholieke Volkspartij ( KVP), who was director of the Coöperatieve Centrale Boerenleenbank for several years . He was Minister of Finance in the last cabinet of the war, the third cabinet of Prime Minister Pieter Sjoerds Gerbrandy , and Minister of Economics in the first cabinet of Prime Minister Louis Beel from July 3, 1946 to January 14, 1948. As a minister, he set up the bank council and presented a draft law on the position of the central planning office. He advocated lower state regulation than his predecessor Hein Vos from the Partij van de Arbeid (PvdA).
Life
Degree and bank manager
After attending the Roman Catholic Sint Canisius College in Nijmegen, Huysmans, the son of a cigar manufacturer, began studying business administration at the Dutch Business School Rotterdam (Nederlandse Handels-Hoogeschool) , which he finished on October 17, 1924. He then began his professional career with a traineeship at Incasso Bank in The Hague. On March 25, 1926 he completed his doctorate in economics at the Dutch School of Economics in Rotterdam with the dissertation Termijnhandel in valuta , in which he dealt with futures transactions .
Huysmans was then from 1926 to 1927 authorized signatory of the National Banks Association in The Hague and subsequently from 1927 to 1932 director of the office of the National Banks Association in Heerlen . He then acted as director of the Coöperatieve Centrale Boerenleenbank in Eindhoven between 1932 and 1945. For his services he was awarded the Officer's Cross of the Order of Orange-Nassau on May 31, 1939 .
Finance and Economics Minister
On February 23, 1945 Huysmans was appointed by Prime Minister Pieter Sjoerds Gerbrandy as Minister of Finance (Minister van Financiën) in his third cabinet. He held this office in the last cabinet of wars of the Second World War until June 25, 1945. Afterwards he was a member of the board of directors of the Center for Citizenship Education (Centrum voor Staatkundige Vorming) , the scientific center of the KVP. At the same time he was from November 1, 1945 to July 3, 1946 managing director and chairman of the board of the finance company (NV Maatschappij tot Financiering) of the Nederlandse Herstelbank .
Most recently, Huysmans was appointed by Prime Minister Louis Beel to his first cabinet on July 3, 1946, where he held the post of Minister of Economics (Minister van Economische Zaken) until he was replaced by Sicco Mansholt on June 14, 1948 . As a minister, he set up the bank council and presented a draft law on the position of the central planning office. He advocated lower state regulation than his predecessor Hein Vos from the Partij van de Arbeid (PvdA). Furthermore, on January 21, 1947, he was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Order of the Dutch Lion .
His marriage to Maria Anna Cornelia Jacoba Janssens on September 13, 1927 in Tilburg resulted in two daughters and two sons.
