Gerd Ganteför (* 1956 in Leipzig ) is a German experimental physicist and professor at the University of Konstanz . He is known for his popular scientific work, public appearances and lectures on scientific topics. He attracts special attention through his public appearances on the feasibility and costs of the energy transition and his climate-skeptical views.

biography

From 1977 Ganteför studied physics at the University of Münster . He completed his studies with a diploma in astrophysics in 1984. In 1989 he received his doctorate from Bielefeld University (photoemission from metal and van der Waals clusters). In 1990/1991 he was a post-doctoral student at Exxon in New Jersey . He then went to Forschungszentrum Jülich , where he completed his habilitation in 1996. Since 1997 he has been a professor at the University of Konstanz. He also held a research professorship at Johns Hopkins University (Faculty of Chemistry) from 2008 to 2011 . Since 2011 he has also been teaching energy and climate at the Thurgau University of Education . Furthermore, since 2015 he has been a board member of the "Akademie Berlingen". From 2009 to 2012 he was - and from 2016 he is department spokesman for physics in Konstanz.

His research area is clusters , extremely small nanoparticles with sizes down to individual atoms . In this size range, the matter has novel properties that have a high potential for application. He presented his research area in the popular science book “Alles Nano oder was?” In an understandable way for laypeople. For this he received the literature prize of the Fonds der Chemischen Industrie in 2014 .

In his popular science book on climate change, which also addresses other issues such as world population growth and energy alternatives , he recognizes anthropogenic causes of global warming , but does not expect any catastrophic effects from climate change. Rather, the chances of warming outweigh the odds. The book is a typical example of climate-skeptical views. Ganteför accuses researchers and politicians who warn of the consequences of global warming for "world saver hysteria". Conversely, however, he also warns against playing down the consequences. In 2011 he was a guest in the Philosophical Quartet on ZDF (alongside Frank Schätzing and the hosts Peter Sloterdijk and Rüdiger Safranski ) on climate issues .
