Gerd Wolf (physicist)
Gerhard Hans Wolf (born November 11, 1933 in Eger , Czechoslovakia ) is a German physicist .
Life
Wolf spent his childhood in Eger in what is now the Czech Republic , where his father worked as a lawyer. His family was friends with the family of the later SPD member of the Bundestag and President of the Center against Expulsions Peter Glotz . At the age of twelve, however, she had to emigrate to Aalen as a result of the displacement . From 1952 to 1957 he studied physics in Munich , among others with Heinz Maier-Leibnitz .
After completing his studies, he worked as a plasma physicist, including at Forschungszentrum Jülich , in the development of a nuclear fusion reactor ( ITER ). In addition, after completing his habilitation, he taught at universities in Tübingen and Düsseldorf . On September 21, 1998, he was nominated for membership in the European Economic and Social Committee , where he was active in political advice, mainly in the fields of energy and science, until 2015. He is an associate of the Académie Royale de Belgique .
Wolf is married and has two children.
Honors
On June 10, 2005, Wolf was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit, 1st class , for his services to German science and the advancement of fusion research . In his laudation, the then State Secretary for Science in North Rhine-Westphalia, Hartmut Krebs , summed up Wolf's services: “For more than four decades, Professor Wolf has promoted European research and the next generation of scientists. In addition, he made a significant contribution to Germany taking an important position in global fusion research today. "
