Gerhard Egger (born October 14, 1949 in Gosau , Upper Austria ) is an Austrian songwriter , composer, author and alpine rock pioneer from the very beginning. He is also called "Mostrocker".

Life

Folk musician (from 1953)

Gerhard Egger (school band), Bad Goisern, 1962
G. Egger (Art Boys Collection), Konzerthausstudio Vienna, 1970

Gerhard Egger attended elementary school in Gosau from 1956 and switched to secondary school in Bad Goisern in 1960 . There he was on stage for the first time in a school band with the later rock singer Wilfried Scheutz . In 1964 he went to the music and educational secondary school in Oberschützen in southern Burgenland. So far, autodidact, he received piano and church organ lessons there for the first time. As a fan of the Beatles, he learned to play the guitar on his own and began to write his own songs in English.

Songwriter, educator, producer

In 1969 he moved to Linz , enrolled at the Pedagogical Academy and won the Innviertel Grand Prix interpreter competition with his own songs. As a singer, guitarist and songwriter for the Art Boys Collection group, he reached 3rd place in the disc parade of radio station Ö3 in 1971 with “Jesus said” . This was followed by tours with the Milestones , Worried Men Skiffle Group , Waterloo & Robinson and Marika Lichter .

Egger wrote mixed styles for the ABC album “Stoned Wall”, which was released in 1972. After a radio boycott, production was initially only moderately successful. Egger left the group, completed his studies, took up a position as a primary school teacher in Stadl-Paura and hitchhiked through Europe for two summers making music. In 1974 he married and acted as the spokesman for an "action group for elementary school teachers", which initiated the legal equality of elementary and secondary school teachers with a signature campaign. A year later, in 1975, he switched his Anglo-American mix of styles to dialect and embellished it with elements of folk music. In addition, he toured for 5 years as a keyboard player and singer with the cover band "Broadway" through Austria and Bavaria. In 1980 he founded the recording studio Ringstraße in Wels with musician colleagues, to whom the composer Hanneliese Kreissl-Wurth later joined, and wrote songs for Waterloo & Robinson , Waterloo solo and Wilfried Scheutz , some of which were produced by Christian Kolonovits or Klaus Prünster .

Mostrocker (from 1985)

G. Egger (Mostrocker), Rockhouse Salzburg, 1996
G. Egger (world band), World Festival Stadl-Paura, 1999

In 1985 he started the band "Gerhard Egger & Die Mostrocker" together with guitarist Gery Moder . They called their mix of styles of rock and folk music, which had hardly been used until then, "Mostrock". Line-up: G. Egger (vocals, guitar, keyboards), G. Moder (guitar), W. Zeininger (bass), W. Grabmayr (keyboards), M. Eder (drums). In 1987 the first album "Vom Dachstoa bis nach Tennessee" caused quite a stir, even before musicians like Attwenger , Rauhnacht , Ausseer Hardbradler , Seer and Hubert von Goisern stormed the stages. The alpine rock opera “Hallstatt-Das Mystical” was released in 1991 as the second album. On the occasion of the Hallstatt culture week "Art in the High Valley", the rock theater piece was premiered in 1993. In 1994 Egger became a successful composer and a voting member of the Austrian copyright society AKM . In the same year he moved to Lambach .

In 1995 Egger / Moder produced the third album "Hoamatblues" with the support of the studio musicians Willi Langer and Tommy Böröcz. The single "Scheni Leni" was often played on the radio. A double alpine rock tour with the Ausseer Hardbradlers followed. Instrumentation: G. Egger (vocals, guitar, button harmonica, harmonica), G. Moder (guitar), G. Landschützer (keyboards), Chr. Sigl (bass), F. Stingl (drums). In 1996 Egger created the alpine rock children's musical “Der Flößerkater & Die Traungeister” and brought it to the stage in Stadl-Paura with 300 participants. In addition, he wrote a reading and song book. A year later in 1997 he gave a concert in front of the Vienna City Hall on the 10th anniversary of the occupation of the Hainburger Au by conservationists. The single “Gemmas an”, which was released from the fourth album “Grenzgänger”, stayed in the Austria-wide top 15 airplay charts for 25 weeks. The cross-border tour also led to Vienna's Ernst Happel Stadium and the Berlin International Radio Exhibition .

World musician (from 1998)

In 1998 Egger wrote and produced the “Stadlinger Hymne” according to the motto “Think globally, act locally”. An album was created with ten different versions and performers from the pop, rock, folk and choral music scene as well as from the classical music scene. For the 1999 World Festival he contributed the “WeltSong” to MIVA and presented it with the WeltBand, which included musicians from Africa, Latin America, Asia and Europe. In 2000 he dedicated the Christoph Sieber Surfing Song to the Olympic surfing champion Christoph Sieber and premiered it at his Olympic gala. In 2001, in collaboration with the author Ruth Zizlavsky, a reading and song book for children was created with the title “Rüdiger, the fire dragon ".

In 2002 the daily newspaper Oberösterreichische Nachrichten commissioned him to set dialect texts from their Franz Stelzhamer poetry competition “Segn und Sagn” to music. The result was presented on a CD of the same name and at a gala in the Landestheater Linz. In 2003 the album "SchonZeit" was released with Egger's settings of Stelzhamer poems. An Austria tour with the mustrockers and the new drummer Stefan Hofer followed.

principal

In 2003 Gerhard Egger took over the management of the Stadl-Paura elementary school and devoted himself to school development over the next six years . In 2009 he retired from teaching and was awarded the ring of honor of the Stadl-Paura community for his services. In the same year his "Zwiegedichte" appeared in the poetry anthology of the Stelzhamerbund.

author

In 2010 the Mostrocker published his book "Traces of Time from the Inner Salzkammergut ". In posthumous collaboration with his grandfather, he embarked on a historical search for traces. The book was also presented at the Frankfurt Book Fair . In 2011 the forty year old album of his first band Art Boys Collection was reissued. Radios and internet platforms on every continent ensured that it reached number 1 in the Nitro download charts. Reviewers from Japan to the USA spoke of one of the most beautiful rediscoveries in recent years . As a result, an original LP from 1972 was traded in collectors' circles for up to 2,800 euros.

Late works

In 2012 his album "Gerhard Eggers Lonely Mostrock Band" was released with twelve self-written songs in the songwriting style of the Beatles. According to AKM, six songs from it made more than 5000 ORF radio appearances in the next few years.

In 2019 Gerhard Egger and his mustrockers (Gery Moder, Gerald Landschuetzer and Stephan Hofer) appeared again on the occasion of his 70th birthday and his 50th anniversary on stage with the album "Regenbogenland". It was the first part of a soundtrack for an autobiographically colored music theater piece on the subject of the peace movement and Summer Of 69.
