Gerhard Endress

Gerhard Endress - internationally also written Endress - (born October 23, 1939 in Friedrichsdorf , Taunus ) is a German Arabist and professor emeritus for Arabic and Islamic Studies at the Ruhr University in Bochum .

After receiving his doctorate at the University of Frankfurt am Main in 1965, Endressess was a research assistant at the Oriental Seminary there, where he completed his habilitation in 1972. From 1975 until his retirement he held a professorship for Arabic and Islamic studies at the University of Bochum.

Gerhard Endreß has been a full member of the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences since 1983 . In 2002 he was visiting professor at the École pratique des hautes études , Paris .

His main areas of work are philosophy and the history of science in the Arab- Islamic culture of the Middle Ages and Arabic philology, in particular classical Arabic literature. Graeco-Arabica , the Greek-Arabic translation and tradition, is a special area that only a few scholars have worked on : Endress is the editor of an Arabic translation by the Neo-Platonist Proklos and, together with Dimitri Gutas, editor of the Greek and Arabic Lexicon .
