Gerhard Meyer (resistance fighter)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gerhard Meyer , also Gerd Meyer (born January 12, 1919 in Berlin ; † August 18, 1942 in Berlin-Plötzensee ) was a German resistance fighter and member of the Baum group . He was executed as a victim of the Nazi war justice system.

Life and activity

Gerhard Meyer's father owned an interim master shop for men's bespoke clothing. His mother was a housewife. In 1935, Gerhard completed his schooling and began his apprenticeship as a locksmith at Kaimann in Greifswalder Strasse, at the corner of Ostseestrasse (later VEB Luftfilterbau). In the summer of 1940 he was forced to work in the so-called Jewish department in the Elmo factory of Siemens-Schuckert AG in Berlin-Spandau .

With Herbert Baum , known from the Jewish youth movement since 1935 and linked through joint illegal activities, Gerhard Meyer was one of the most politically conscious forces in the "Jewish Department". Here he was instrumental in attracting new, young fighters. In early 1941 he married Hanni Lindenberger . The young couple Hanni and Gerhard Meyer had lived together under the most difficult of conditions for barely a year and a half when they were torn apart forever.

Herbert Meyer was his older brother.
