Gerhard Moll was born in 1920 in Berlin, Prenzlauer Berg. His parents had moved from the Swabian Alb to Berlin because of economic hardship ; they were Huguenots . The son should be better off. After several attempts to find the right job, he declared that he would become a painter - a job that was starving for his parents. From 1939 to 1945 he studied at the University of Fine Arts in Berlin .

In 1942 he was drafted into the Navy. He was a pacifist . So he simulated schizophrenia and was admitted to the Stralsund sanatorium. That was tantamount to suicide because the mentally ill had little chance of survival. Miraculously, he survived the war.

In 1945 he married the graphic artist and calligrapher Ruth von Carnap , from whom he divorced in 1952. From 1948 he lived in Berlin-Friedenau. From 1952 to 1955 he was a master student under Heinrich Ehmsen at the University of Fine Arts . He belonged to the group of artists at the Gerd Rosen gallery in Berlin and the artist cabaret “The Bathtub”.

A good friend during this time was the painter Wolfgang Frankenstein , who was artistic director of the Gerd Rosen gallery from 1948 to 1951 , moved to East Berlin in 1953 and became a professor at the Humboldt University after the Berlin Wall was built. The sculptor Waldemar Grzimek , professor at the Berlin-Charlottenburg University of Fine Arts from 1948 to 1951 , and the sculptors Gustav Seitz , Fritz Cremer and Gerhard Marcks were also loyal friends .

When there were violent clashes between East and West during the Cold War , Gerhard Moll withdrew; he finally wanted to paint in peace. He worked hard and still lived at the subsistence level. Today his former partner Jutta Zimmer shows his work at home and abroad.
