Gerhard Peters (art historian)

Gerhard Peters (born December 12, 1899 in Detmold ; † November 6, 1995 there ) was a German art historian and cultural advisor for the city of Detmold.

Life

Gerhard Peters graduated from high school Leopoldinum in Detmold and then attended the University of Heidelberg and the University of Munich , where he received his doctorate in 1924 under Heinrich Wölfflin . From 1925 to 1934 he worked in Leipzig at the Karl Baedeker publishing house as an art-historical clerk and editor; in particular, he revised the Baedeker volume Spain and Portugal , published in 1929 . From 1935 to 1936 Peters was entrusted with the inventory of the art monuments of Lower Saxony and Upper Silesia . He completed his habilitation in 1944. After the war and captivity, he returned to Detmold in 1946 and headed the Adult Education Center (1947–1974), the Lippische Volksbildungswerk (1952–1974) and the Detmold State Library (1954–1964). From 1961 to 1970 Peters was a member of the board of trustees of the North Rhine-Westphalia Art Collection . In addition to teaching at the institutions he heads, he also worked at the Northwest German Music Academy , the Detmold Carpenter School , the Paritätisches Sozialseminar in Detmold and the Furniture Trade School in Wöbbel .

Gerhard Peters was honorary and part-time cultural consultant for the city of Detmold and co-founder and consultant of the Lippische Gesellschaft für Kunst .
